Volunteer Spotlight: Mrs. Sariye
Every last Saturday evening of the month, Sariye arrives at the ICC kitchen with a case full of fresh herbs and a smile. One of the lead instructors for our cooking classes, Sariye is happy to teach others how to cook. "Food is a universal language," she says as she rolls out fresh lahmacun dough. "When someone learns to cook a traditional Turkish dish, they're not just learning a recipe, they're becoming a part of our history." For Sariye, the kitchen is just a starting point. Over the past year, she has mentored in our charity programs and donated cakes to our weekly community service campaign. "I teach people how to cook, but they teach me what community really looks like," she smiles.
If Sariye’s passion for sharing culture inspires you, we would love to have you pull up a chair. Visit our upcoming events page to reserve your spot at the next cooking table.
